Has underwater dog photography become a new trendsetting form of photography with a new breed of imitators? Said scenario probably won't happen in the immediate term when you consider how new it is and the person who invented it holding exclusive rights. The man who started a new pet photography franchise is a reminder of how a simple photographic idea can turn into a lucrative business through the online world. Sometimes all it takes is a simple device to allow you to photograph in an unusual place.
Seth Casteel's Novelty Idea Seth Casteel was a struggling, debt-ridden photographer when he decided to purchase a waterproof camera case that allowed him to easily photograph underwater. After photographing dogs jumping into pools from the underwater perspective, he must have realized he had something unique. Nobody can deny being entertained at the different and fascinating expressions he discovered that dogs make once they jump into a pool of water. After posting some of those dog pictures on Facebook in 2012, the reaction was tremendous. Eventually, the photo album reached up to 30,000 likes on Facebook, and people flooded Casteel's website in a desire to order prints. Orders of his prints have since gone on to be a very lucrative business. And, of course, a book was eventually published that managed to assuage those who wanted to see the photographs in tangible form. To date, he's published more dog photography books that have gone on to bestseller status. Those not in the know, however, might puzzle over why these underwater dog photos have struck such a chord with the public. Pet Photography is a Huge Market A professional photographer looking to make a good living might want to consider going into pet photography, because there's a big market for it. Regardless, capturing something unique about our pets is where the real prize is. Casteel managed to capture more primal expressions in dogs when they fetch a ball or other object in water. His photos captured a side of dogs we don't normally see in the above-ground world and only in fleeting moments. The fact that he's also an animal activist brought some additional inspiration. This might open the doors for other pet photographers to try and capture other unique pet moments in oddball settings. With cat photography also being popular online, will we see someone capture a feline moment we don't usually notice? The same might be said of isolated wildlife as a more challenging photographic opportunity (perhaps with unmanned timed cameras). Even if you do this on an amateur basis, you'll want to have excellent prints made of your work. Click-Scan-Share is a leader in bringing superior results to your photographic projects. Camera filters are useful for adding certain effects to photos, but these little pieces of glass and metal can be quite expensive. If you're looking to get creative with your photos but unsure about your budget, the best solution (and used by many professional photographers) is to make your own camera filters from things such as an inexpensive UV filter, odds and ends and a rubber band.
Canvas prints add a new level of artistry to photography, digital photo printing and wall decor. If you're looking for something beyond a one photo display however, you can take your canvas photo prints to the next level by creating a unique photo series.
Scanning slides to digital formats is now standard in preserving all your family photos from the last 80 years. Quality of scan, though, is still an issue for many people, even though advancements keep making scanning so much easier. One major name in the camera and scanning business might be leading the way in providing higher quality scans, as well as the ability to more effectively clean the slide.
![]() Did you know that July is Family Reunion Month? We think family reunions are a great chance to get the family together to share stories and celebrate the bonds that unite us. We were also thinking that photo mugs could be great conversation starters, and memory makers, on your next family reunion. Here are some of the ideas we had in mind. Inspiring Human Connections By Exploring The Human ExperienceAs the only anthropology museum in the region, we are the place to go to learn about each other, to reflect upon our place in the world, and to build a better community. As the only anthropology and archaeology museum in San Diego, the Museum of Man has a mission to "inspire human connections by exploring the human experience." The museum, which opened in 1915, documents human experiences through a variety of sources, from physical archaeological artifacts to large volumes of rare literary and science journals.
Now through October 13, 2013, San Diego's Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) celebrates its 30th anniversary with the unique retrospective, 30x: Three Decades, featuring one acquisition from each year of the museum's existence. This flowing time capsule along gallery walls includes works by Alexander Rodchenko, Lee Friedlander, Loretta Lux, and many more.
