Inspiring Human Connections By Exploring The Human Experience
As the only anthropology museum in the region, we are the place to go to learn about each other, to reflect upon our place in the world, and to build a better community.
As the only anthropology and archaeology museum in San Diego, the Museum of Man has a mission to "inspire human connections by exploring the human experience." The museum, which opened in 1915, documents human experiences through a variety of sources, from physical archaeological artifacts to large volumes of rare literary and science journals.
Among the core exhibitions at the museum are the Maya, Ancient Egypt, Footsteps Through Time and Native Californians exhibits. These permanent exhibits remain in the museum year-round. The Children's Discovery Center is another core exhibit, one that teaches children about ancient Egypt and the work associated with excavating an archaeological Egyptian site. The museum's featured exhibitions are the temporary displays that seek to explore important contemporary issues and how they impact our lives today. These exhibitions include Instruments of Torture, a fascinating look at the social implications of torture devices in the post 9/11 world. A documentation of different life events is featured in the Rites of Passage display, a celebration of the different events and cultures in the San Diego area. Access/ABILITY is an award-winning exhibit that features the wonders and accomplishments of the disabled. One of the most celebrated special exhibits is named From the Vault, a collection that features 20 hand-picked items out of the 400,000 artifacts in the museum's inventory. |
When embarking on a trip to the Musem of Man, don't forget to explore the more than 25,000 photographic images in the archaeology, ethnology, and anthropology slide collections. Photos can also be found in the ethnographic collections, which features the writing, photography, and discoveries of accomplished ethnographers throughout time.
